Indian Furniture

Indian furniture is great fun to incorporate into any design scheme because the wild grain on the wood and the deliberately naive ironwork on many pieces gives it an unsophisticated and quirky look. In the conservatory they are perfect, especially if you like lots of plants growing in there because the roughly carved effect is just the thing for a slightly ‘jungly’ finish.

Because of its rather unusual overall effect, Indian furniture is great as a one off and doesn’t have to be matched with the rest of the wooden furniture in the room, although a whole dining room in the style does look amazing. In a living room, Indian furniture looks incredibly luxurious if you team it with a sofa laden with bright cushions, fringed throws and comforters, preferably with a gold thread running through it and with as many little mirrors sewn on as you can manage. The subcontinent look is easy to achieve and not expensive – the main thing to remember when trying to get that very sumptuous look is that this is one case where more is more, particularly when considering bedroom furniture!

Indian furniture is finished with a glorious oiled effect, which needs little maintenance, just the occasional polish. The wood is very deeply grained, often with dark and light patches in the pattern, which makes it very hard to spoil with rings and other marks, so it is ideal for family furniture like dining tables where accidents are most likely to happen. So enjoy your Indian furniture and have fun with it – it won’t mind at all!
